Nokia N800 Internet Tablet
If I am on-line and you want to chat in real time, or if I am off-line and you want to leave a message with my local IM program, allow pop-ups, then :::
Before I moved to Madison, I sold my laptop thinking I would need the extra cash for rent and utility hook-ups. It ended up that I had enough from what I have saved, and what was given to me by family. In any case, I am now laptop-less. I guarantee that will be a single word in a few years.
Being a poor man with great and powerful technical desires, I have been dreaming of owning a laptop once more. It’s more like an on-going lookout for an inexpensive laptop.
I have to admit, I just have not been impressed at what I have been finding. For the most part, the decent laptops I have been finding are overkill for just about anything I would use them for. The low end laptops are too heavy and bulky. I am just starting to loose interest in the whole portable computer market. It's like spaghetti to me, very uninteresting.
What would I be doing if I had a laptop? That's an easy question. I would be at a hotspot browsing the web, checking e-mail, and reading my news. Damn it all if I need a word processor for school or something. I will bust a vessel, but for now I am not going to worry about it. On a side note, I find myself much more productive working on work at home - a lot less of distractions.
Portable internet devices have been striking my curiosity lately. There are many compelling reasons for owning one of these gadgets, and the one that strikes as the most obvious (because it has always bugged me), is the size and weight. What a pain in the ass to carry around a laptop. I don't care if it is a 4lb tablet sized PC, you always have to worry about bumping it, protecting it, bringing peripherals… It is absolutely ridiculous. How can someone say they bring there laptop everywhere, and have a smile on there face. BS, laptops are a pain in the ass. For all you new laptop owners: it will wear off soon.
The dedicated internet tablets rarely gets to the press. People are usually looking for a multi-multi-infinite function portable PC computing machine. Me? I bought a Nokia 6019i phone, get the picture?
So in my quest for personal (yes personal) satisfaction and techie communication needs, my next coffee shop, restaurant style internet browsing machine is in no way going to be a laptop.
I have been looking at the Nokia 770 internet tablet. It is a tiny device (love that) running a Linux OS variant. It includes the Opera browser, e-mail application, and news reader. There are a few other BS applications, but just a few, and I like that also. It's just a little over $300. It is small enough to stick tightly in a pocket. I like big pockets. You can stick stuff in them tightly. This machine only weighs 8 ounces. In any case, I have been on the product page non stop the last couple days. I haven’t looked very hard for others, but for the respect of the hundreds of alternatives, I will keep my eyes open. That will be something I do as soon as the coolness narcotics (thanks Nokia) starts wearing off.
Buying this bad-ass is a different story. It will hurt, even as inexpensive as it is. In the mean time, anyone have other suggestions?
