300 BAUD Acoustic Modem Working Presentation

29 October, 2009 17:39 CST6CDT

This video demonstrates a 1964 300 BAUD acoustic modem.

The case for the modem is a wooden box with a DB-25 port, power input port, an off and on switch, and a hand-held handset placement cradle for early to mid 80's style telephones.

The person demonstrating this device states that a full fledged RS-232 to DB-25 interface is needed to change the modulation tone with the correct power requirements of the modem.  His first attempt used a USB to serial cable and could not get the modem to function because of this reason mentioned above, the power requirements.

The example uses Minicom for the terminal application in which he dials into a legacy dial-up system.  He then does a remote log on to a user based server system in which he uses lynx to navigate to the front page of Wikipedia, on a 300 BAUD connection!
