Packers Game, CSS Modifications, & Verizon Hoopla

15 January, 2011 19:05 CST6CDT

The Packer game is in progress and I predict a victory without hesitation of thought.  I am a Wisconsin native, so the 6th seeded GB versus the number 1 seeded Falcons should make for an exciting game.  I am not usually glued to the television during football for its entirety, but it is in the forefront for half of game, and I would not miss the 4th quarter for such an important event as this football game is.

I made a few modifications to Myside's Spew CSS code making it both IE and Firefox friendly where in the past I was only concerned with Firefox/Chrome/Opera rendering.  I work on the template when I feel like messing around and having a little fun.  I do not have a good eye for font and color coordination, but every few months I dig into the template code and make a modification or addition that satisfies me for the time being.

Verizon announced the iPhone will be available on the 10th of February for new customers, and it will be available to existing customers a few days before the public distribution of the Apple product.

The Verizon iPhone is a clone of the AT&T GSM phone with just a couple modifications.  A 3rd slit over the antenna area is supposedly required for CDMA technology versus to two slits for GSM.  It contains a CDMA transceiver antenna and that is about the extent of the changes in phone structure.

This was not an Apple announcement as the Apple iPhone is not a new product and therefor Steve Jobs was not present at the announcement.  Verizon made the mistake of turning down Apple for the initial iPhone carrier before the existence of the phone on the consumer market.  Apple seems almost uninterested in the carrier addition Verizon.

The CDMA iPhone does not have Verizon's 4G LTE technology so data services will be provided over 3G EVDO or CDMA 1x 2G.  I assume Apple is to busy developing a new iPhone version and IOS integration to bother with going out of its way to help the hand that would not shake with their company from the start.

I am concerned with the tremendous numbers of CDMA cellular towers, in respect to the US GSM and HSPA carriers, in which I can only think of AT&T and T-Mobile at this time.  Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, and numerous other small bell cellular companies share and roam data and voice throughout the country.  Although availability for each company is regulated with tower access and use charges, I fear that with the majority of cellular towers being of CDMA technology, iPhone data will congest other carriers access all around the country.  I have Sprint service using EVDO on an Android device.  Where I live, 3G EVDO is provided by Verizon using carrier access compensations.  I am expecting late February to be a prime example of network unavailability because of global tower access congestion combining all tower specific and roaming carriers.

I had chatted with a friend a couple of days ago about his thoughts of the Verizon iPhone offerings, whom is an AT&T customer.  His reaction to the announcement gives him ongoing confidence that disgruntled AT&T iPhone customers will switch in masses to Verizon lowering the number of dropped calls and unavailable of data occurrences.  He finished his comments stating that he will be much better off as a user of cell phone services with AT&T and wishes all of the CDMA/EVDO customers good luck and have fun with the 50kb/s voice only communication that will come in which we both commented that the end result of the inept Apple fan-boys will cause national repercussions across all carriers using CDMA throughout the country.
