From around 8:00 in the morning to 4:00 in the afternoon, our
neighbors dog, directly below us, barks non-stop.
It is so frustrating listening to that bark through-out the entire
day. So, idiotically, I was thinking to myself, a dog whistle
might shut the thing up.
The frequency of a dog whistle is generally between 5200Hz and
12800Hz.
I have a pretty decent amplifier that can produce a tone close to
these ranges, so I decided to give it a try, in hopes to shut the
fucking dog up. (damn dog, damn dog, damn dog)
Using Audacity, a Linux sound mixer, generator, studio
application, I generated a steady tone of 12400Hz, well below my
19kHz range capacity.
I exported this to a wav file, and used XMMS to generate a steady
loop of the tone range; the range being a sign wave of an amplitude
of 1, and I started at 12400Hz.
So wow, I was somewhat training the dog to shut it's fat lip.
Then, without warning, I heard multiple barks from inside this
complex.
Stupid is what stupid does, I turned up the volume on the
amplifier, just to make sure the fuckers got my point. (damn dogs,
damn dogs, damn dogs)
My receiver automatically terminated the signal to my speakers,
warning me that my digital signal (an analog signal would not have
been accurate to these ranges), at that amplitude, was dangerous.
So the story begins there.
My right channel no longer works;
it is rather distorted. However, it can still produce the
frequency range that stops that fucking dog from barking (damn
fucking dog, @#$#$$%@#%). I know this, simply because it works.
I am no sound expert, but there is some level of distortion to
this tone. The human ear can sense sound in the range of
20Hz - 20kHz; that being, your body can respond to the pressure of
these amplitudes (may not be a distinguishable sound, but it is felt,
similar to dejavu). So, my question is, is there any way to
produce a tone, with a frequency, between 12400Hz and 19kHz, that is
inaudible by the human ear?
It's not so much getting this dog to shut up, but is there any way
I can piss it off just as much as it does myself?

more on the sandalwood shopping
01 March, 2006 13:38
OK, so I stopped in the herbal / alternative medicine store on Williamson street in Madison.
Althought they advertise essential oils directly on there store-front window, their selection was rather limited.
Aside from the limited selection, the receptionist was not very receptive to my presence; almost annoyed at it. I finally found a vial of sandalwood, 15ml. I asked if she could tell me the country of origin, then she replied with a umm, hmm, umm, took no further action, and discontinued the conversation.
Apparently their customers are not concerned with such important information.
The bottles were poorly labeled, appeared re-packaged, and suspicious at the very least.
Oh well, it was the exact same price I was looking at on my suppliers product page. Although they don't have the selection they used to, they do still sell sandalwood from Tamil. I think I was one of the last to get a hold of a vial of Sandalwood CO2. Ordered a couple of them, love it. There Mysore sandalwood is out of stock also, giving me the impression they are not concerned about providing sandalwood, or ARE concerned about the repracutions of distributing the oil.
The three sources I am looking at now are: Nature's Gift (with the 2002 Tamil), Mountain Rose Herbs (whome I have purchased sandalwood from before, but was not impressed with the oil), and AromaThyme (very expensive, and never purchased sandalwood from before). I will have to get a data sheet from the later if I plan on ordering.
I also visited a stone shop this morning. They had a very interesting stone vial that I was drooling over. Over $90 though, but soo tempting anyway. I would love the fill that with some good sandalwood and seal it up for a few years.
It looks like I will be doing some googling anyway, for the CO2 extract. While I am doing that, I might come acrosse a supplier with aged Mysore sandalwood.
In case some of you think I am off the wall, if you take a good deep breath of aged sandalwood, I am sure you will relate it to an opiate or something similiar. It is absolutely amazing.

on the market in search for the perfect aged sandalwood
01 March, 2006 10:33
It's time for my yearly order of sandalwood. I have been shopping around, looking for alternatives to Mysore sandalwood. Australian sandalwood doesn't quite agree with me, except in synergies.
The last time I ordered, I obtained two 15ml bottles of sandalwood from Tamil. This batch was incredible, so I decided to store a bottle away and let it age a bit. I am thinking I will pop it open in 10 years or so. It was distilled in 2002 and already the bottle I have open smells incredible.
Just to add, I also have two 2ml bottles of Tamil sandalwood distilled in 2000. Already 6 years old, and like nothing I have experienced before. I will probably never touch these, except to occasionaly crack it open to take a whiff.
Already, since the last time I ordered, the price has risen dramaticaly. There is a herbal supply store up the street I haven't been to yet. I will check that out first. If I can't find the right sandalwood, in all it's perfection, I will order online from my regular distributor.

I migrated from Gallery 1 to Gallery 2. The initial setup of the application was pleasantly painless. The installation wizard is one of the best I have used.
However, the migration of data was not much fun. First of all, godaddy doesn't seem to like a script running for more than a couple of minutes. I tried changing a php variable inside .htaccess, but that was a no-go and made my content inaccesible. The reason I needed the script to run longer, is the integration of some 2000 pictures from Gallery 1.
After several attempts at importing them at once, I set out to seperate the pictures in batches of 300 in seperate directories. I then imported the pictures with the local directory feature, one directory at a time.
This had worked for the most part, but I started getting a lot of file locking errors, to many files open, and the likes. I switched over to SQL indexed file locks, and the problem went away.
After several attempts at getting everything fine and dandy, my last successful attempt I declined from making the mod_rewrite declerations. I am not about to do this over, and create them. Sorry if the absolute links are no longer absolute.
In any case, I have a pretty stable picture gallery that will be able to support the amount of pictures and video clips I plan on throwing at it.
