Apple tries to market the IPOD to extraterestrials
27 March, 2006 11:46
Alright, this whole IPOD thing is getting a little absurd. The whole idea was exciting and interesting when the IPOD first appeared on the market. Each new generation of the device excited me also.
Now, however, I am getting a little sick of the whole buzz around, and what is becoming, a cult of sorts. I don't mean to be so harsh, but I can't make it through a day without hearing or seeing something related to the media player.
So seeing this post on Gizmodo, I am hung in disbelief. Most people will find the idea of seeing the Apple fuzz from the depths of space interesting, but the idea in its entire sense makes me rather tired, and unimpressed. In fact, it somewhat angers me.

This is a candidate for the Bullshit tag. Thumbs down to your use of resources and marketing tactics Apple. I hope the aliens don't take a look, and fly the other way.

nano circuit, or nano engineer?
24 March, 2006 11:28
This is just amazing. Engineers were able to create a 50Mhz circuit, 18 micrometers, on a single carbon nanotube.

It boggles me to even try to imagine a 12 circuit structure on not even a fith of the width of a human hair.
I think they mastered the shrinkage machine. Boss, I shrunk the engineer! How else? Just kidding, but it is an incredible accomplishment non-the-less. [digg]

My store is slowly coming along. I can see why they release an API for the web based configuration manager. It is one of the most feature rich, yet complicated applications for the sales of products on the net that I have come across. However, since installing it, I have been learning and discovering that this is the right application for my needs and for my ability to use it as such.
Today I received my order of essential oils to start out this free-lance project. 5 pounds of oils total.
Before I sell these oils, in 5ml batches, my to-do list includes:
- Refine the on-line store
- Obtain a labeling application
- Order the bottles (found an excellent source)
- And finally figure out the legality and responsibilities for the distribution of the products.

how to make a bad website

Here is an example of a bad website. Although I have seen one or two that are worse, this comes pretty close to cutting the cheese.

Floor Sir? Floor 13 please, and to hell with everyone else on the way.
16 March, 2006 16:42
Thanks Dane and Nate for this link. It looks like most elevators have an enabled (sometimes disabled) feature to transport you to the floor of your choosing without stopping in-between to pick up passengers also waiting for their ride.
The "express mode" is enabled by pressing both the DOOR CLOSE and the FLOOR LEVEL at the same time. The linked article above points out that the majority of elevators have this feature, but specify these as an absolute one way trip to the floor of your choice:
- Otis elevators
- Dover elevators
- Most Desert Elevators
Although I have the itch to take a ride downtown and try this on any high rise building I can find, I am even more posessed for this reason:
I sometimes find myself waiting to ride the elevator to a high level floor. However, some stairway incapable traveler decided to take the elevator to the basement. Notified by the bright red signal pointing to the ground that the ride will first go down, and only then will it rise from the depths of hell, I ponder the possibility of hopping into one of these cages, proceed to enable the hack, and wonder (with an evil smile on my face), if I will first go up to floor 13, and then of course back down to the depts of all that is not known above ground.
So, I must try this as soon as possible. If I were to succeed, I will be pleased and satisfied for at least a few days, maybe even a week. This will include evil looks, grins, laughter, and un-controllable urges to grow red horns and possess any elevator passenger I might ride with.

Part of life is sometimes becoming or developing to the dreams of
others. Growing up in this matter means conforming to the
expectations of those around you. Often times it is just an
accepted understanding that you must meet the accomplishments of
others around you, to strive to grow bigger, and profit from these.
In turn, this often gives you a feeling of satisfaction, and other
times gives you a feeling of status.
When you are born and raised, you are often taught values from
your parents or social group. Most of the time, these values
truly help build a structure of goals and punctuality, a persona.
These values are usually permanent and follow you both on and off the
path of your life and relationships.
For example, take a family with a medical profession. Often
times the children are urged to take the resources available to them,
and enter into a profession of the same caliber that provided the
previous generation success. Although the child's technical
profession may vary, such as a son of a father in pediatrics might
differ from the profession of the son in general medicine, the scope
of the son's life is often set by the principles of his upbringing.
The son knows how to succeed in life, he branched out with a personal
interest of his own, but he is bound by a scope in which his choices
of a career is not necessarily boundless, but rather rounded.
For another example, take for instance an artist and her
daughter. Often times growing up with values such as
appreciation for your surroundings allows you to branch out into
goals of enrichment, but are still adhered to there scope of
understanding.
"You're tired of dreaming someone else's dreams
When they really don't include you any longer"
I wonder what I would think about, if I
didn't think of what others thought about myself. What would I do,
what would I strive for, and what other dreams would I have of my
own? The biggest question I have with this, how would I express
myself?
"So shut the suitcase, kiss the year goodbye
Don't let
nobody stop you at the doorway
And close the shutters on this
empty room
Where these crazy dreams come crawling to devour you"

hall of mirrors cat torture
11 March, 2006 11:41
I thought the cat piano was a bit cruel and unusual. Now, the hall of mirrors, created to torture cats, takes the cake. Athanasius Kircher one sick individual.
Gaspar Schott wrote:
"You will exhibit the most delightful trick if you
impose one of these appearances on a live cat, as Fr. Kircher has done.
While the cat sees himself to be surrounded by an innumerable multitude
of catoptric cats, some of them standing close to him and others spread
very far away from him, it can hardly be said how many capers will be
exhibited in that theatre, while he sometimes tries to follow the other
cats, sometimes to entice them with his tail, sometimes attempts a
kiss, and indeed tries to break through the obstacles in every way with
his claws so that he can be united with the other cats, until finally,
with various noises, and miserable whines he declares his various
affectations of indignation, rage, jealousy, love and desire. Similar
spectacles can be exhibited with other animals."

I wish I could find an historical reference to the cat that pissed this guy off. Whatever the feline did; eat his sandwich, kill his pet bird, digging in his garbage, set the stage for selective torture of its species for that time.
By the way, don't think too much about building one of these. It would be kind of funny for a few minutes, but it is sure to wear off. On a side note, it would be interesting to stick a mouse in the contraption. OK, I am done thinking about it...
